I don't get all this "goodbye to Memorial Stadium" stuff. Memorial gets a long overdue makeover. From the outside it will look exactly the same only look like it is sitting on other buildings, like the crown jewel that it is. The inside gets redone. Whoopee! It's about time. The North and South endzones will still be the North and South endzones. The tunnels will still be the tunnels. We will all be back in 2012 to enjoy the still spectacular confines of Strawberry Canyon - the most beautiful football venue in college sports. It is BEAR territory!
Do we want a home and home with Alabama or any other top tier teams? They just increased their stadium to 101k. Do we want to compete for the very top talent? Let's show those impressionable teens the best that we can offer - a long, long history, a respect for the setting and state of the art facilities. "Winning is not everything" as Andy Smith's inscription reads. So then, let's make the experience breathtaking and compete with all comers. We'll win some, hopefully most. Let's be the envy of the fans, competitors and visitors from everywhere. When has California not been the envy of most anyway?
Thank you Jeff Tedford, Sandy Barbour, Chancellor Birgeneau and all who have and will contribute to this investment and for bringing us this opportunity. May you prosper in your new digs in 2012.
See ya then Memorial - hope your work stays on time and under budget. Looking forward to seeing you then.
